Railway laser scanning pilot project in PKP Słomniki

In collaboration with Krakow University of Technology (Politechnika Krakowska), we conducted an experimental survey of the railway infrastructure facilities at Slomniki Station. The purpose of the project was to determine the feasibility of utilising 3D laser scanning for track gauging.

A Riegl VZ-400 3D laser scanner with a range of 500m was used for data capture. All scan data was registered into a single coordinate system with an average registration error of ± 5mm. Scan data was controlled by the recording of control points at each scan setup.

The main advantage of implementing 3D laser scanning on a project of this nature is that the data capture can be completed remotely and therefore means there is no Interruption to the traffic on the railway system. The speed and accuracy of data collection are unprecedented. Once collected the point cloud data can be utilised for further applications.
